New program at Hamot aims to get kids reading at early age

Local News

ERIE, Pa. — It’s never too early to learn a love for reading.

That’s the thinking behind a new program at Magee Women’s Hospital at UPMC Hamot.

The program will provide a new book for every baby born at the hospital. The program also includes a flower for every new mother as well.
The thinking is that providing books to kids at a very young age can build a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

“We hope that this is going to be a long-term project in terms of attempting to improve literacy for all of the kids that live here in Erie County,” Dr. Mike Balsan said.

Hooked on Books is providing the books for the project while the local Kiwanis Club will supply the flowers for the new moms.
