ERIE, Pa. — The landscape of retail in Erie is changing as customers alter their shopping behavior.
Despite consumer confidence hitting a 15-year high in December, stores at the Millcreek Mall are shutting their doors as more people move to online shopping.
Traditional stores across the country are feeling the impact, and locally Sears, Limited and PacSun are closing.
Joe Bell, a spokesperson for Cafaro Co., owner of the Millcreek Mall, said the mall is working to meet customers’ needs.
“In our industry, the shopping center development industry, we have to be cognizant of what the people are desiring,” Bell said, “and that’s why we’ve been evolving over the past dozen years or more to bring in different types of offerings beyond just apparel retailers.”
The closing of Sears doesn’t come as a total loss for the Millcreek Mall, as Boscov’s will be opening in the store’s former space in October.
