Community leaders prepare for a worldwide initiative to serve others.
Today, coordinators and volunteers with local organizations gathered in the Blasco Library to discuss Global Youth Service Day. The unofficial holiday will take place on April 27th.
Here in Erie, more than 1,000 people are expected to gather at East Middle School to participate. The teens will then take to the streets to help out with several clean up and beautification projects.
Shniya Knight, of the Youth Leadership Institute, tells us, “When young people get involved, it gives us the opportunity to have a title; it makes us feel good and it’s also a good day for us to be able to go out and have fun. It makes us feel like we can give back even though we’re just helping, but it’s still for good causes.”
This year’s theme is, ‘Say it, Say it Loud’.
Organizers say Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event in the world.
