Penelec cuts power to downtown Erie due to underground fire

Local News

A good piece of Erie’s downtown is without power right now from Sassafras to Holland and from Front to 18th streets.  The cause of the outage is an underground fire.

The area affected has left much of the center city without power just as thousands of people would be leaving work for the day.  Erie firefighters have been focused on the intersection of 10th and State streets.  They have set up a command center at the Avalon Hotel.

This blackout forced several buildings to close early for the day including Erie City Hall.  Erie County Council has canceled their meeting for tonight.  Erie County 911 is reminding motorists that all intersections where the traffic lights are out should be treated as four-way stops.

We have a crew at the scene and will have live updates throughout the newscast.

UPDATE:

Power was restored to all affected customers by 7:26 p.m., according to Penelec.
