There will be another round of repairs to the dry dock facilities at Don Jon Shipyard after initial renovations cost less than expected.
The first round of repairs fixed the floor of the 40-year-old dry dock, which allows ships to be taken out of the water for repairs.
That contract was finished under budget, so the decision was made to use the remaining money to repair the side walls, as well. That work will be bid in May and completed over the summer and early fall.
Supporters like Brenda Sandberg of the Port Authority say the investment is worth it. “They are an excellent economic driver for the City of Erie, as well as the region, employing almost 200 individuals in the winter time at family-sustaining wages”.
The repairs were funded by PennDOT, who approved the use of the leftover dollars.
