Perry Square glows in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month

Local News

Perry Square is now glowing pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For a decade now, the city of Erie lights the fountain in pink.

But before that, there was a small program to bring awareness and celebrate survivors.

Katie Staynoff Jones was diagnosed with breast cancer this past April and finished chemotherapy last month.

The 35-year-old own’s Miss Katie’s Dance Studio in Edinboro and couldn’t understand why this would happen to her.

But then she thought about it.

Jones says, “I have this because I’m surrounded by woman and young girls. And if I can get a mom to get checked or one of my students to get checked or teach them how to get through tough things in life then that’s why I have this.”

All the survivors and city officials remind everyone during the program to get regular check ups.

This year is also special because it’s the first year the fountain is being lit with LED lights instead of dyeing the water.
