Pope Francis calls for the Roman Catholic Church to be more welcome and less judgmental in his most recent encyclical called the joy of love.
In the 278 page statement, the pope seemingly signals a pastoral path for divorced and remarried catholics to receive holy communion. He also calls for priests to welcome single parents, gay people and unmarried straight couples who are living together.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church once again closes the door on same-sex marriage, saying it cannot be seen as the equivalent of heterosexual unions.
In response to the pope’s encyclical Erie Catholic Bishop Lawrence Persico released a statement saying
“It reflects at length on many issues and situations couples and families face today. The holy father reminds us to approach even complex and challenging situations with eyes and hearts of mercy. He demonstrates once again, his ability to apply theology to everyday aspects of our lives.”
