A new award can now be given out to outstanding citizens in honor of the late Phil Fatica.
Erie County Councilman Ed DiMattio approached Councilwoman Kathy Fatica about creating an award in her husband’s honor after the holidays.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday night in support of the Phil Fatica Erie County Citizenship award.
The award will be given to citizens who present leadership and initiatives for positive change in the community.
Fatica says, “Phil would just be very proud. He wouldn’t think that it was something that should happen probably, but now that we’ve done, I think he will be very, very proud.”
DiMattio says, “Phil was just a great guy. And I think, too, it was a product of numerous things, and I think when you find out who we have mind for this first award, it will make more sense to everybody at that point.”
The award will not be given out annually, but instead when a person shows the attributes of the award.
DiMattio and Fatica say they already have someone in mind as the inaugural recipient, and they hope to announce that person soon.
