Police see surge in burglaries around city

Local News

ERIE, Pa. — Erie police are warning residents about an uptick in burglaries happening throughout the city.

Thieves are breaking into both homes and cars in search of anything valuable now that the holiday gift-giving season is nearing its end.

If you’re going out of town, police ask that you notify your neighbor so that they can keep an eye on your house.

Police ask that you always leave a light inside your home on, even when you aren’t there. Double check to make sure that all of your windows are locked.

Police also ask that you have nothing left out in plain view in your car or home.

“When you are putting your garbage out make sure that you cut the boxes up,” Erie police deputy chief Greg Baney said. “Make sure that you put everything in bags so that you’re not publicizing what you’ve gotten for Christmas.”

Baney said the number of reported burglaries overall are down this year.
