ERIE, Pa. — Pope Francis recently did an interview with a German newspaper where he reportedly said he is open to married men becoming priests.
Erie Bishop Lawrence Persico said he believes that the Holy Father is saying this could be a possibility but it studies would have to be done on the issue.
The bishop believes this is a long way from reality.
“We’ve experienced this before,” Persico said. “The Holy Father has made observations for comment and people right away think they will be followed through. So it’s almost like the Holy Father thinking out loud.”
Persico said there is already a special accommodation in the Latin Church for those who come in from other faiths who are married and want to become Roman Catholic priests.
