A new summer program proved to be effective.
Results show students who were enrolled in the YMCA and Building Educated Leaders for Life’s (BELL) Power Scholars Academy did not suffer from the summer slide.
The program was offered to k-5th graders at Peiffer-Burleigh Elementary School.
The students who participated were called scholars.
The scholars gained an average of 1.5 months in literacy skills and 3 months in math skills.
“Children especially from low-income neighborhoods often fall grade levels behind their peers as a result of summer learning loss. So for these children to have that extra help, to be taught in more of a small-group setting clearly was beneficial to them,” Tammy Roche, YMCA of Greater Erie, said.
Those who put the program on hope it will be back next summer.
Roche said they are currently seeking funding.
