Representative Wentling announces grants for schools in 17th District

Representative Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) today announced numerous schools in the 17th District received funding through the Department of Education’s Safe Schools Equipment Grant program.

“This grant funding to our local schools will better help administrators protect our children,” Wentling said. “Protecting our children so they can learn in a safe environment is of the utmost importance.” 

Grant funding will be used for conflict resolution or dispute management, positive behavior support, risk assessment or violence prevention curricula, just to name a few programs. In addition, the money can be used for security-related equipment, such as identification systems, metal detectors, protective lighting, training for security-related technology, among other things.

The following schools received funding through the Safe Schools Equipment Grant Program:

•    Mercer County Career and Technical Center, in the amount of $19,755.  
•    Mercer Area School District, in the amount of $19,670. 
•    Lawrence County Career and Technical Center, in the amount of $19,395. 
•    Commodore Perry School District, in the amount of $20,000. 

In addition, the following schools received funding through the Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant:

•    Conneaut School District, in the amount of $32,500.  
•    Erie County Technical School, in the amount of $26,250. 
•    Girard School District, in the amount of $40,000. 
•    Lawrence County Career and Technical Center, in the amount of $52,140. 

The Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grants are for two years and are intended to be used for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.

Commodore Perry School District and Crawford Central School District received the second-year allocation of their 2016-17 Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grant. Commodore Perry received $20,000 and Crawford Central received $30,000.
