A Saegertown woman will join some of the most famous athletes in the world Wednesday night when she attends the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles.
Shawn Morelli is among three women who are nominated for best female athlete with a disability for this year’s awards.
The ESPYs, which recognizes sports-related achievements, will air on ABC at 8 p.m.
A 1994 Saegertown High School graduate, Morelli is a world champion Paralympic cyclist.
Morelli, a former army commander, was stationed in Afghanistan in 2007 when a roadside bomb exploded, leaving her blind in one eye and battling seizures, tremors and spasms.
She also had limited movement on the right side of her body.
Through therapy and rehab, Morelli re-learned to ride a bike and has turned into one of the best in the country.
Morelli will represent the United States in the Paralympic Games this September in Rio.
