Former sailors who served on a submarine support ship are making port in Erie this week.
We met some crew members of the USS Canopis, a ship that served in active duty from 1965 to 1997. The Canopis was a ship that supported submarines, making repairs when needed and rotating submarine crews that wouldn’t be seen for months.
One of those crew members, Jim Morschhauser, tells us, “Each crew was out six months at a time and once they submerged, you never saw them again for four months. It was an important mission and it was an exciting mission to be part of”.
This is the 17th year for Canopis crew members to get together, but the first time the reunion is in Erie.
