Tomorrow night’s Erie City Council Meeting could be another long one as McBride Viaduct supporters plan to speak and Mayor Joe Schember plans to give a presentation.
Council President Sonya Arrington asked Schember to speak on his position on demolishing the viaduct. The mayor released his stance early in the year, saying the best plan for the city was to get rid of the bridge as soon as possible.
He says his position has not changed. “This isn’t for any personal motivation; it’s because I have looked at it all, I have talked to everyone, and thought deeply and prayed about it, to be honest, and I really, truly believe that the best thing for the city is to get rid of the viaduct.”
City Council approved the demolition bid at their meeting earlier this month. PennDOT officials have said demolition work could start as soon as this spring. Tomorrow night’s meeting begins at 7:30 in Erie City Council Chambers.
