A local professor of forensic science is teaching students from around the world about how to dig up bones.
About 20 students from around the globe gathered at Mercyhurst University for the 24th annual Death Scene Archaeology Course.
Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat teaches a one-week program on how to properly collect remains after a tragedy.
Students were given a hands-on experience in a wooded area on how to process an outdoor scene.
“We have presented it to many individuals, but if you don’t get down on your knees and practice it, it is very difficult to understand the principles,” said Dirkmaat, chair of the department of applied forensic sciences
Participants of the program are mainly students and members of law enforcement.
