The Earth Day celebrations continued this morning at Jo Anna Connell Elementary School.
In a collaborative effort between Connell Conservation, HAPPI 92.7HD and Environment Erie, students helped plant five Cleveland Pears from Gerlach’s around the school property.
Fifth grade teacher, Laurie Hogan, says the tree plantings are a way for the students to learn stewardship as well as gain firsthand experience in improving their environment.
“Student involvement is the key because they are the caretakers of the earth and when we are all old and gray, depending on how we want this planet to be functioning, it’s going to be up to them,” said Hogan.
Earth Day activities continue Saturday at the school from 11am until 2pm. Students will plant a butterfly garden and develop their backyard wetland into an outdoor classroom, as well as install several benches throughout the area.
