ERIE, Pa – The annual Summer Block Parties are kicking off early next month for the 12th year, but this time, with some new changes.
The Erie Downtown Partnership announced the 6 dates and multiple locations for this summer’s block party events.
It’s a change from previous years, but it’s in effort to highlight the many assets we have here in Erie.
Drawing hundreds of residents downtown each summer, the annual Block Parties are no doubt a hit in the community.
But new changes to the event have some residents skeptical.
The Erie Downtown Partnership says the changes are in line with the Downtown Master Plan.
One of the goals is to implement an aggressive promotional campaign for downtown businesses, partners, programs and events.
“Every year these events have grown and grown and we’ve looked at this as the opportunity now to partner with some other organizations within our community to make them even better yet.”
The Block Parties will showcase locations that are considered assets to Erie and highlight the newly defined Downtown Districts.
“The perfect venue for a concert, city officials are excited to move some of this year’s block parties to Perry Square.”
The other locations are Griswold Park, UPMC Park, and the Bayfront.
Businesses had the opportunity to submit an application to participate as a vendor for the Block Party within their district.
Alkeme, a new Mediterranean restaurant Downtown, was notified of their acceptance as a vendor for the first Block Party in Perry Square coming up in June.
They say they’re satisfied with the change.
“Actually, I’m happy that they’re being taken off of the streets. It makes more sense to have it in a park type context … it’s safer for the kids, it’s safer for everybody”
A portion of the proceeds from the Block Parties will benefit the Erie Downtown Partnership’s “CARE” Fund, an initiative of their “Care About Revitalizing Erie” campaign.
The dates and locations of the Block Parties are below:
June 8th – Perry Square
June 22nd – Erie’s Bayfront
July 6th – Griswold Park
July 20th – UPMC Park
August 10th – Perty Square
August 24th – Griswold Park
