It’s history in the making at a local hospital as we witness a three-way organ exchange and transplant operation.
A helicopter; a critical link in a chain of events that means multiple lives are saved today. UPMC Hamot is one of three UPMC locations taking part in an inter-hospital chain. It’s the first in the history of transplant services within this healthcare network.
UPMC Hamot in Erie received a kidney from UPMC Pinnacle in Harrisburg. Then, a kidney was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, and finally, they sent an organ back to Pinnacle in Harrisburg.
UPMC Hamot Transplant Coordinator Aimee Hagerty says this was no easy feat. “This was a big crew that got pulled together today… crews at each hospital… transplant teams… well over 100 people that were involved in putting it all together.”
It took about two and a half months to coordinate this swap, from finding the donors to handling the logistics.
We will have more on this for you tonight on Action News at 5 and 6.
