A violent crash involving a garbage truck claims the lives of two women.

The two-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 6 and 27 in Pittsfield Township around 10:30 Thursday morning.  A car with three occupants was westbound on Old Pittsfield Road, stopped at a stop sign, and proceeded to cross over Route 27 to Route 6 West.

Pennsylvania State Police say the driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic and was struck by a garbage truck that was traveling east on Route 6.  The driver of the Subaru, a 71-year-old woman, and an 80-year-old passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.  A third woman was flown to UPMC Hamot in critical condition.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
