Victim of early morning stabbing identified, her mother and child home at the time of the crime

Residents in the Millcreek neighborhood of Mill Street describe the community as quiet and safe, but that wasn’t the case last night when police say a woman was killed at the hands of her boyfriend.

Millcreek Police were dispatched to a home in the 5700 block of Mill Street for a report of two individuals covered in blood.  The affidavit of probable cause says a man, now identified as 23-year-old James Gilbert, was standing in the driveway, bleeding from the chest.  He reportedly told police, “I think I killed her; she’s in there.  She’s the Devil.”

Authorities then found a woman unresponsive in the home.  Paramedics administered first aid, but could not save her.  The coroner’s office pronounced the woman dead at the scene shortly after 12:30 in the morning.

The woman is now identified as 20-year-old Marinda Matasowski.  Gilbert is believed to be the victim’s boyfriend.  According to documents, the two have an infant son together.

Police believe Gilbert plunged the knife into his own chest after stabbing the victim.

Gilbert has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

Neighbors say they can’t fathom such a heinous crime took place so close to home. Lauren Kullen says, “To know that something like that happened, it’s really shocking. It’s really different from the typical atmosphere of the neighborhood.”

Art Kujawinski tells us, “…You don’t want anything like that happening in any area, not just your own home.”

Police spent several hours searching the home, garage, and the driveway; that’s where crews found a vehicle splattered with blood, next to a blood stain on the ground.

The affidavit indicates the victim’s mother and child were both home at the time of the crime.  Police believe the defendant used a large, stainless steel kitchen knife to kill the victim.

This is still an ongoing investigation.
