Volunteers got in the Christmas spirit a few months early this year.

Community members filled more than 27-thousand empty shoe boxes for children in need.

The boxes are packed with toys, hygiene items and school supplies.

The Northwestern PA Operation Christmas Child Team will deliver the gifts to boys and girls living in poverty.

“Just a simple item like a tooth brush or pencil can really change the life of a child who may not be able to go to school without school supplies or may be sharing a tooth brush with 20 other children,” said Kathy Schriefer, the event coordinator.

Operation Christmas Child will be packing bags at the Grace Church all day Saturday as well.
