A local fire department prepares for the call they hope they never have to answer.

State police led an active shooter training event for the West Lake Volunteer Fire Department. The presentation focuses on what first responders need to know about a mass casualty emergency. Strategies and tactics were explained to help them act and react to the situation. These firefighters say it’s an unfortunate part of the world right now.

“As ugly, and as you don’t want to think about it, it is reality and we need to be able to act Without flaw…Just get in there and do what we need to do,” said West Lake Assistant Chief Dennis Albrewczynski.

The firefighters also underwent “stop the bleed” training provided by UPMC Hamot. This focused on dealing with the injuries from a mass shooting.
