Two states just passed laws this year that made breastfeeding in public legal, therefore women are now allowed to breastfeed in public in all US states.
Women in Pennsylvania have been able to breastfeed in public without being cited for public indecency since 2007.
“Just having women breastfeed in public is one of the best way we can normalize breastfeeding,” said Cassandra Aho. Aho is with La Leche League of Erie which is international mother to mother breastfeeding support group.
Aho says she knows how it feels to be told breastfeeding in public is inappropriate, but she says it ultimately the mother’s decision when it comes to breastfeeding. “You need to do what is best for your family and for your comfort,” said Aho.
For mothers breastfeeding their child at Liberty Park, there is a nursing station located at the edge of the playground.
We spoke to a mother of three at Liberty Park about breastfeeding in public. She says she is glad it’s now legal in all 50 states. “They shouldn’t have to cover up, they shouldn’t have to go into the bathroom, they shouldn’t have to go into a port-a-potty,” Ashlee Filegar. “I mean they should be able to feed their babies where they need to.”
A father of three told us that he thinks to breastfeed in public should be normalized, but certain people tend to sexualize it. “I think they should just keep in mind on what part of the planet that they on because it’s people around that tend to get excited about things like that and you know that’s not cool,” said Eric Daniels.
Another father, Jason Semrau says his son was breastfed in public and he doesn’t see anything wrong with it. “I think that people should mind their own business,” said Semrau. Idaho and Utah were the last states to pass legislation that allowed breastfeeding in public.
August 1st is the start of World Breastfeeding Week which goes until August 7th.
