The president delivered his State of the Union Address Tuesday night. Our Washington Correspondent Alexandra Limon has the details of the president’s message.
President Donald Trump delivered his address to a divided Congress, a Republican Senate, but a Democratic House. Nancy Pelosi sat behind the president for the address.
“Together, we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions…”
After calling for unity, the president took a shot a Democrats after touting a strong economy.
“The only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations.”
And, doubled down on his demand that Congress fund a border wall, the issue that shut down the government.
“…To defend our very dangerous southern border.”
Senator Jeff Merkley invited a mother and daughter who were separated at the Southern border. “Even at this moment, there are still thousands of migrant children being held in migrant prisons by the Trump administration.”
Democrats wore white to represent women’s suffrage, as well as the record number of women in Congress and their plans to prioritize women’s issues.
Stacey Abrams, who lost a contested gubernatorial race in Georgia, delivered the response for Democrats.
“The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the President of the United States; one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned, not just our people but, our values.”
Now, Congress will have to work out a funding deal by February 15th to avoid another government shutdown.
That will be the first test of whether Republicans and Democrats can work in a bipartisan way.
