An Erie County initiative is pushing companies to be healthier.
Members of Erie County government, the Health Department, and the American Heart Association coming together this afternoon to kick off Erie Walks.
This year, 15 businesses are in a competition to see which employees can exercise the most.
Organizers say the fun challenge addresses a larger health issue. Gina Klofft of the American Heart and Stroke Association says, “Unfortunately, heart disease and stroke is still the number one and number four killers in our community and we know that physical activity is a great benefit in terms of reducing your overall risk.”
County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper says, “We just encourage all of our community members to get out there and exercise 30 minutes a day and this is just one of those reminders how important this is for their health and for the health of our entire community.”
Each employee will individually record how much time they spend walking. While the competition is already underway, coordinators say it’s not too late for a business to sign up.
