A caller asked a question… “What if the massive power outage that disrupted the world’s busiest airport happened in Erie?”
It was actually two problems that caused the failures in Atlanta; a fire causing a first outage, followed by equipment problems that took out backup generators. In Erie, backup generators are in place for runway lights and other essential equipment needed for landing, but an outage could affect some luggage and terminal systems.
Landing isn’t the problem in a power outage, but take-offs are. Erie Airport Director George Dowdy says, “The carriers will not have computers, will not be able to process passengers… We’ve not had a significant power outage here in a long time, even though we’ve had a few short-term ones, we don’t anticipate having another one but you never know”.
