UPDATE 4:25pm: It has been confirmed that the plate numbers from the car involved in the shooting in Chicago are the same as those on the APB for the Crawford County murder suspect, Kenneth Martell.
Law enforcement authorities in Lake County Illinois outside Chicago are investigating a possible connection between a man shot to death by police in a shoot out this morning, and the hunt for a suspected killer in Crawford County.
The suspect in the shoot out was driving a Kia with Pennsylvania plates, which is the kind of vehicle Pa State Police say 36 year old murder suspect Kenneth Martell was believed to be driving. Martell is wanted in connection to this weeks murder of 88 year old Theodore Garver of Springboro.
The Lake Co Sheriff’s Dept told JET 24 Action News that their department is working with Pennsylvania authorities to establish a possible connection between the two incidents. However, there is no positive ID on the shooting suspect at this time.
Just after 5:00AM a Lakemoor Police Officer was on patrol in the area of Four Seasons Boulevard and West Sullivan Lake Road. The officer observed a suspicious SUV backed into a gravel area, on the west side of Four Seasons Boulevard. The Lakemoor Officer exited her squad car to check on the vehicle and adult male occupant.
While the Lakemoor Officer was speaking to the man, he produced a handgun. A struggle ensued between the man and the Lakemoor Officer. During the struggle, a second Lakemoor Officer arrived at the scene. As he approached, he observed the offender was in possession of a second handgun. At least one of the two Lakemoor Officers fired at the man. The man was struck and subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene.
Both Lakemoor Officers were transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is on the scene conducting an independent investigation of the incident. The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon.
