Anti-apartheid icon Winnie Mandela, the former wife of South Africa’s late President Nelson Mandela, has died.
According to a family statement, she died at a Johannesburg hospital Monday after her health began to fail earlier this year. Along with her former husband, Winnie became one of the most recognizable faces in the decades-long struggle to end apartheid.
Winnie spent time behind bars during her years fighting for the cause and kept Nelson Mandela’s memory alive during his more than 27 years in prison.
Winnie Mandella was 81.
