Brian Daboll’s magic mind thrills Bills offense

NFL Buffalo

Ask any of the Bills to describe new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and the praise will roll right in.

“He’s definitely a guru,” said wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud. “A brilliant mind,” said tight end Charles Clay. “He’s one of a kind, I’ll just say that,” said quarterback A.J. McCarron.

The Bills hired Daboll to help turn around an offense that finished in the bottom third of the league last season in points, yards, and first downs.

“It’s an evolving process,” said Daboll. “You find out what guys do well, what guys struggle with, who is doing what, where you want to put the person, what one of the quarterbacks feels comfortable with versus another.”

Daboll comes to Buffalo with a reputation of being creative with his play designs to put his offense in favorable matchups against the defense. That creativity can show up at any moment and the Bills have to be ready for any new idea.

“He can be walking back and two minutes after practice and he’ll want to add it,” said McCarron. “That’s something you have to know with him. Have to learn fast and always be on your toes, always be ready for new stuff.”

Brian Daboll’s 21-year coaching career includes working under Nick Saban and Bill Belichick, but Western New York has always been home. He attended St. Francis High School outside of Buffalo and played football at the University of Rochester in the mid-1990s.

“Being from where I’m from, I take a lot of pride in that,” said Daboll. “Working for your hometown team is a blessing.”

At any Bills practice during training camp, Daboll’s interactive approach is always on display as he bounces from group to group.

“I think just being yourself. Making sure you show them how much you care about them,” said Daboll. “It’s always been important to them. They don’t really care how much you know until they know how much you care, and I’ve said that before. It’s a tough job, a demanding job, but it’s the world we live in.”

And that world may soon join the Bills offense in heaping praise to Brian Daboll.
