Lawson returns to practice while McCoy leaves early

NFL Buffalo

The Bills defense has emerged as one of the best in the league over Buffalo’s four game winning streak.

Since the disaster back in week 2 against the Jets have not allowed 20 points and are now second in the NFL in both sacks and turnovers.

This week they added another weapon to an already impressive front seven with 1st round pick Shaq Lawson.

Lawson has been out since May with shoulder surgery.

Head Coach Rex Ryan is eager to get Lawson on the field Sunday at Miami, but doesn’t know to what extent he’ll play.

“As we know, he hasn’t been to one practice yet, so we’re going to see how it is. Obviously we’re going to err on the side of caution, but if he’s ready to roll and we feel great about it, he feels great about it, the doctors feel great about it, then let’s let it rip,” said Ryan.

After his first NFL practice Lawson was smiling ear to ear. “ I’m just getting back in the routine, getting back in the motion. Remember, I haven’t had a helmet on or shoulder pads in the last, probably since the national championship game. So I’m just trying to get back and see how I feel this week. Coach is going to make that decision. But I felt great out there. Felt better. Better than I’ve ever been. Felt completely healthy. So, I mean, it was just great. It was just great to be out there.”

There is excitement for the defensive group that knows with how well they’re playing right now without Lawson and Marcell Dareus and thinking of what this defense is capable of.

“You see I’m smiling. [Shaq Lawson] can add pressure on the quarterback trying to get the ball out and I’m trying to jump that route. Shaq’s got some fresh legs, so I’m ready to see what he’s got. Adding him, that’s a great addition. When Marcell gets back, you all already know how that is. We’re just adding onto the fire. We’re just making it bigger and making it stronger,” said Bills cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman.

But after practice news hit the locker room that LeSean McCoy injured his hamstring and wasn’t able to finish practice.

Rex Ryan said it was not related to the injury McCoy suffered right before halftime this past week against the 49ers and they’ll have to wait and see how he progresses through the week.
