Open competition. Two words that can surprise a locker room.
Rex Ryan took time during the bye week to self scout his own team and while he’s focused on the playoffs, he knows their a long way away from where they need to be.
“We’re going to have competition in a lot of different spots this week and give guys opportunities to earn starting nods…we have to do what’s best for our football team regardless of maybe where we thought. Let’s do what’s best. Whoever’s playing best will be out there,” said Ryan
The Bills find themselves on the outside looking in at the playoff picture but, with eight games remaining, they do control their own destiny. While the question is, what is the magic number of wins that gets Buffalo in, Ryan isin’t getting ahead of himself.
“Generally 10 (wins) gets you in. It’s not all the time, but generally that’s what happens but with us, I know we want to get away from the, whatever—our focus has to be on Cincinnati, and that’s it. You can’t worry about getting to 10 wins. Shoot, we have to worry about getting five wins so I think that’s where we have to look at. We haven’t earned the right to think about anything further than that,” said Ryan.
Center and team leader Eric Wood went on IR after breaking his leg in Seattle and has opened a battle between Ryan Groy and Patrick Lewis to fill Wood’s large shoes.
“It’s nice to get a little extra time to work with a new center, ya know Wood does so much for this team from identification stand point from getting everyone going in the right direction. So having an extra day to communicate with Groy and work with him has been good,” added Richie Incognito
Ryan also added that there are open competition for starting nods in the secondary as well.
Corey White split first team reps with Ronald Darby on Monday.
Darby’s play has dropped off in his second season in the league as was benched Monday night against the Seahawks. Ryan said after the game Darby was battling an illness and that he shouldn’t have played him.
