Reacting calmly under pressure; it’s an ability that can mean the difference between life or death. And, it certainly came in handy when our Good Kid of the Week’s grandmother needed her the most.
Shirley Pecora was home with her granddaughter when she suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest.
“I don’t know what happened. I talked to her and I passed out.”
16-year-old Michaela States stayed calm and swiftly moved into action, calling 9-1-1 and staying by her grandma’s side until help arrived.
“She was quick thinking didn’t lose her cool.”
Michaela tells us, “I knew I had to do something; I couldn’t just stand there, so…”
In a situation you don’t often encounter, Michaela handled the mounting pressure and when her grandma’s heart failed, she didn’t miss a beat.
“Well, I was scared, but I knew exactly what to do. I don’t know how, but I did it.”
Both ladies forever grateful to be together to enjoy another day together.
“It’s amazing; she’s still with us and knowing I’m the reason why is even better.”
Shirley tells us, “I just think she’s an amazing girl”.
Their admiration for each other is certainly mutual.
“She’s a big inspiration to me; always will be. She’s pretty amazing.”
“I’m a proud grammy.”
