A local teenager with dreams of serving in the military, just like her grandfather, took on a community service project at the Soldiers and Sailors Home. It’s her way of giving back to veterans.
Scarlett Seneta feels strongly about giving back to military veterans, so she started recruiting help from members of the community to show our local heroes how much they’re appreciated.
The Northwestern High School Senior says, “I felt this passion because my grandpa was a resident at Soldiers and Sailors Home because he was in the Navy”.
With a wish list from the Soldiers and Sailors Home, she started at her high school collecting items they need, and then encouraged the middle school students to write to them. “The thank you letters I made into a binder so residents were able to read them and it’s placed in the lounge there.”
It didn’t stop there, even the elementary students pitched in. “I had kids color pictures for Veterans Day. We were able to get a lot; there was close to 200 pictures I received back.”
Scarlett’s mother, Debi, is in awe of her daughter and her efforts to pay it forward. “She’s developed a good sense of values and uses those to guide her in her everyday life and my daughter has actually become my role model”.
Scarlett has a role model of her own, in her late grandfather. “I wanted to do this almost in memory of him and give back.” And, she plans to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. In the summer she will leave for boot camp, then she plans to get an “education in religion to become [a] Chaplain in the Navy; that’s the ultimate goal”.
