The bomb squad was called to a Liberty Street bank and now Erie Police are searching for a robbery suspect.

Police believe the man in the photo demanded money from a bank teller and left behind a package which said was an explosive.  The suspect then fled the bank on foot, but investigators aren’t clear on whether or not he had a vehicle waiting.

It was shortly after 10am when Erie Police received the report of a robbery at the Northwest Savings Bank in the 3400 block of Liberty Street.

After the suspect fled, bank officials followed protocol and evacuated the building.  Police crews eventually determined the package was not explosive.

Mike Nolan of the Erie Police Department says, “At the time it was dispatched, all we knew was that he left in an easterly direction so most of our focus was in that area so we did kind of canvas the whole area for any signs of anything that could be related to this.”

Authorities do not believe the suspect had a weapon.  He is believed to be a light-skinned black or Hispanic male 25-30 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Erie Police Department at 814-870-1151 or 814-870-1503.
