BayHawks Stop Herd, Snap Five-Game Skid
Erie, Penn. — The Erie BayHawks (6-10), NBA G League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club, snapped a five-game losing streak tonight, taking down the Wisconsin Herd (9-6), 115-99. Erie outscored Wisconsin 71-51 in the second half of tonight’s match. The BayHawks 71 second half points marks a season-best for points scored in a single half.
The BayHawks held an early seven-point, 11-4, lead. Wisconsin fought back, finishing the first quarter on a 17-6 run. After 12 minutes of action inside Erie Insurance Arena, the Herd held a 21-17 advantage. Both Erie and Wisconsin poured in 27 points in the second quarter. At halftime, the BayHawks found themselves in a four-point, 48-44, hole. Jeremy Evans tallied a first half double-double with 15 points on 6-8 (.750) shooting from the field and 11 rebounds in 19.0 minutes.
Erie opened the second half on an 11-5 run. The BayHawks regained the lead, 55-53, at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter off of a Jeremy Evans two-handed put-back dunk. Erie pushed its lead to seven, before Cliff Alexander tied the game at 69 off of a running jump shot with 1:40 left in the third quarter. Heading into the final quarter of tonight’s tilt, Erie held a 77-72 lead. The BayHawks broke the game wide open, going on a 23-8 run to start the fourth quarter, taking a 100-80 lead with 5:46 left in regulation. At the final horn, Erie walked away with 115-99 victory.
The BayHawks had six players score in double figures tonight (Jeremy Evans-25, Josh Magette-18, Raphiael Putney-16, Tyler Dorsey-15, Roscoe Smith-11 and Jordan Mathews-10). Of those six players, four notched double-doubles. Per Elias Sports Bureau, this is only the second time this season four players have recorded double-doubles for the same team. Santa Cruz had four players (Cleanthony Early, Alex Hamilton, Damian Jones and Georges Niang) record double-doubles against Sioux Falls on December 3, 2017. Jeremy Evans paced Erie with a team-high 25 points and a game-high 15 boards in 33.2 minutes. Josh Magette recorded 18 points, a game-high 13 assists and committed only one turnover in 37.2 minutes of play. Raphiael Putney contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Atlanta Hawks assignee Tyler Dorsey poured in 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Xavier Munford finished with a game-high 28 points, a team-high eight assists, five rebounds and a game-high tying three steals in 34.3 minutes of play for the Herd tonight. Former Erie BayHawks forward Cliff Alexander registered a double-double, contributing 13 points and a team-high 12 rebounds in 29.1 minutes as a reserve. Wisconsin forced 20 Erie turnovers, resulting in 22 points.
