The Edinboro wrestling team finished with three champions and also took third place out of seven teams at the 2018 EWL Championships on Saturday at McComb Fieldhouse. Lock Haven captured its first EWL crown since 1997 as the Bald Eagles also had three champions.
Lock Haven totaled 81.5 points, with Rider just edging the Fighting Scots. The Broncs totaled 72.5 points, while Edinboro had 72. Clarion came in fourth with 57 points.
Cleveland State’s Evan Cheek was named the Outstanding Wrestler after pinning Clarion’s Brock Zacherl in the 141 lb. finals, handing Zacherl his first defeat of the season. Sean Russell of Edinboro and Chance Marsteller of Lock Haven were co-winners of the Most Dual Points award.
Four former Fighting Scots and another individual very close to the program were inducted into the EWL Hall of Fame in pre-match ceremonies. All-Americans Alex Clemsen, Paul Donahoe, Chris Honeycutt, and Deonte Penn were inducted, along with John Dudley, an Edinboro graduate and former sportswriter at the Erie Times News.
Russell captured his third straight title at 125 lbs., while Korbin Myers (133 lbs.) and Billy Miller (hwt.) won their second conference crowns. Edinboro had five wrestlers reach the finals. Andrew Shomers and Ty Schoffstall finished second at 157 and 174 lbs., respectively.
Russell and Miller earned their third trips to the NCAA Division I National Championships in Cleveland, Ohio on March 15-17. Myers is headed to Nationals for the second time. Shomers had to wrestle a true second place match after losing in the finals, but he handled B.J. Clagon of Rider, 14-7, to earn his first trip to Nationals. With just one automatic qualifying spot at 174 lbs., Schoffstall will now have to wait to see if he earns a wild card spot this week.
Two other wrestlers joined Russell as three-time EWL champions. Lock Haven’s Ronnie Perry is a three-time champion after winning at 149 lbs., and in the feature match of the night, Chad Walsh of Rider edged Lock Haven’s Chance Marsteller, 2-1, in a matchup of top ten wrestlers at 165 lbs. for his third EWL title.
After winning his opening match by technical fall, Russell had a bit of a scare in the semifinals before winning 2-0 over Ibrahim Bunduka of George Mason. In the finals, he posted a 7-0 decision over JR Wert of Rider. The three wins boosted Russell to 30-5 on the season and 95-22 for his career.
Myers won his first two matches by fall at 133 lbs. before winning his second title with a 4-0 decision over Andy Schutz of Bloomsburg. The redshirt sophomore is now 27-9 heading into Nationals.
Miller met a familiar foe in Lock Haven’s Thomas Haines in the heavyweight finals. The redshirt junior defeated Haines in last year’s finals after losing to him twice during the year. They did not meet during the regular season this year. Miller used takedowns in the second and third periods for a 4-2 decision. He is now 16-4.
In his first appearance at the EWL Championships, Shomers won a 9-0 major decision over Avery Shay of Clarion in the semifinals, but lost by fall in 52 seconds to Lock Haven’s Alex Klucker in the finals. Having to beat a seasoned veteran in Clagon to earn a trip to Nationals, Shomers prevailed in the true second place match despite suffering an injury in the first period, 14-7, thanks to a big second period featuring a takedown and four nearfall points. He is now 29-6.
Schoffstall was impressive in his first two matches, winning by technical fall and major decision. He met Rider’s Dean Sherry in the finals. The two had staged a wild, high-scoring meeting in the regular season, and this one was no different. Unfortunately, Sherry held on for a 16-12 decision and the 174 lbs. championship. Schoffstall, a redshirt senior, is 21-3.
“We wanted to win the tournament,” said Head Coach Tim Flynn, “But you know we have had an up and down year and that was kind of how the tournament was. Hopefully we can get Ty (Schoffstall) an at-large bid. So we will wait and see and hopefully we will have five guys.”
