The Short Story: True freshman Ethan Budd (Port Allegany, Pa./Port Allegany)’s upset of the region’s third-ranked wrestler in Wes Phipps at 197 clinched an eventual 22-16 team victory against No. 8 Mercyhurst Wednesday night and sent a large crowd at the Hammermill Center into a celebration frenzy. The decision improved to Golden Knights to 4-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.

Gannon is listed among others receiving votes in the latest national poll and sits No. 5 in NCAA Division II Super Region One.
The Golden Knights snapped a five-meet losing streak against the Lakers, winning for the first time in the series since a 27-15 decision January 27, 2011 at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon wrestled its fifth nationally-ranked team this season, improving to 4-1 in those meets. The Golden Knights also defeated Wheeling Jesuit which is listed among others receiving votes
Wednesday’s victory came against Gannon’s highest-ranked opponent since the Golden Knights dealt then No. 6 Pitt-Johnstown a 28-6 loss at the Hammermill Center on January 13, 2011.
Every regionally-ranked wrestler except one competed during Wednesday’s meet. Gannon featured seven ranked grapplers while Mercyhurst had five. The Lakers’ Dakota DesLauriers, ranked third at 184, didn’t compete.
Gannon concludes its six-meet homestand Saturday, February 11 against West Liberty at the Hammermill Center.
The Hilltoppers are ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II Super Region One.
The dual meet is scheduled for 2 p.m.
It will also be Senior Day as Gannon will honor Brad Beiter (Erie, Pa./Seneca), John Marotto (Verona, Pa./Plum), Jake Newara (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek), Nathan Reckner (Georgetown, Pa./South Side), Alex Shaffer (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and Garret Smith (Erie, Pa./Seneca) during pre-match festivities that begin at 1:50 p.m.
Gannon has defeated West Liberty 10 consecutive times, including a 26-9 victory last season on the road.
The Golden Knights posted a 31-6 win during the last encounter at the Hammermill Center on February 13, 2015.
West Liberty’s last victory in the series was a 29-15 verdict at the ‘Mill during the 2006-07 campaign.
West Liberty has regionally-ranked wrestlers at 133 and 197.
The only possible match-up between regionally-ranked wrestlers comes at 133 pounds where Gannon’s Carmine Ciotti (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (first and 11th nationally) could face West Liberty’s Bryce Humphreys (fifth).
