Gannon Softball Team’s Historic Run Ends in Atlantic Super Regionals Against West Chester

The Short Story: The Gannon softball team saw its record-breaking season come to a close Thursday afternoon with a pair of losses (8-2, 8-3) to West Chester in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional. The Lady Knights captured their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament Championship and advanced to the Super Regionals for the first time in program history, while setting single-season records in home runs and slugging percentage.

West Chester jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning thanks to four hits. Alyssa Herion put the Golden Rams on the scoreboard first with an RBI bunt, scoring Bri Garber. Madison Kelly scored on a Gannon error and Sara Ercolani scored a pair on a double to right center to make it 4-0.
In the second inning, Rachel Tanilli (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) cut into West Chester’s lead with a two-run homer to left field, her fifth of the season.
The Golden Rams poured on four more runs in the fourth inning on three hits, while capitalizing on two Gannon errors. Garber drove home Annamarie Hartman with an RBI fielder’s choice and WCU plated another pair of runs on a Gannon error to stretch the lead to 7-2. Cat Hammer capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single to shortstop.

Tanilli led Gannon with two RBI in the loss.
Tanilli, Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe), Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes), Lisa Szajn (Maple, Ontario/St. Joan of Arc Catholic) and Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) all recorded hits.
Gannon was out-hit, 8-5.
Gannon committed three errors, while West Chester had one.
Madi Beining (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (15-7) took the loss in the circle.

Gannon leaped out to a 1-0 lead in third inning when Sarah Ingerick (Middlebury Center, Pa./Wellsboro Area) drove home Morgan Nyman (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) on an RBI double to right center.
West Chester tied it up in the fifth with a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Heidi McCollester.
The Golden Rams exploded for six runs on seven hits in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
Tanilli came through once again for the Lady Knights with another two-run homer in the sixth, cutting Gannon’s deficit to 7-3.
West Chester added one run in the seventh on Herion’s solo home run to left field, tying West Chester’s career home run record at 29.
West Chester is making its second trip to the Division II National Finals. The Golden Rams also advanced to the finals in 2014.

Tanilli went 2-for-2 with one home run and a walk.
Stocker, Ingerick, Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and Allie Salerno (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) also recorded hits.
West Chester out-hit Gannon, 13-6.
Gannon committed one error.
Ke. DeMatteis took the loss for Gannon. She fanned two batters.
Beining struck out one in her half-inning of relief.

The Lady Knights enjoyed a record-breaking season, winning back-to-back PSAC Western Division titles, winning the PSAC Championship for the first time in program history and advancing to the Super Regional for the first time in program history.
Gannon’s 48 home runs this season shatters the 12-year-old record of 39 homers set in 2006.
The Lady Knights recorded a home run in 25 games this season. Fifteen games had two home runs or more.
After starting the season in Florida and Virginia with just four homers across the first 15 games, the Lady Knights went on to hit 44 homers over the next 32 games.
Stocker’s 12 home runs ties Joanna Fergus’ single-season record, who also hit 12 in 2006.
The Lady Knights also set a program record in slugging percentage (.478), eclipsing the .466 slugging percentage recorded in 1995.
Tanilli recorded a homer in three of Gannon’s four games vs. West Chester this season. She finished the season with six homers.
Tanilli ended the season on a nine-game hit streak.
Thursday also marks the official end to the collegiate career of Gannon seniors Salerno, Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Katie Eckelberry (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover).
Martinez finishes ninth in Gannon history in doubles (30), fourth in triples (5), seventh in total bases (244), seventh in walks (51) and second in hits by pitch (14).
Salerno ends her college career 13th in assists (180).
