Helping the Gannon baseball team to a series win that bumped them into first place in the PSAC West heading into the final week of the regular season, Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillian ) was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Hess batted .538 (7-of-13) in four games against California (Pa.) last week, including a 6-for-7 day in Saturday’s doubleheader that was capped with a walk-off two-run home run in a 9-7 victory.
The freshman finished the week with nine RBIs in the series, and also scored four runs and walked twice. The weekend bumped his batting average from .286 to .312 on the season, and the pair of three-hit games on Saturday were the first of his career.
It’s the first weekly award of Hess’ career, and the third for Gannon this season after Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) earned the award on March 11 and April 1.
The Golden Knights close their regular season with a four-game series against Mercyhurst to decide the PSAC West title this weekend. The two teams, who are tied atop the division at 18-6, play at Mercyhurst Friday and at McConnell Family Stadium, with both doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m.
