CARY, N.C. – The Mercyhurst baseball team saw its 2018 postseason run come to an end with a 9-0 loss to Texas A&M Kingsville in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II National Championships at the USA Baseball National Training Complex Tuesday evening.

The Lakers complete the season with its second Atlantic Region title in program history (2015) and a 36-15 overall record.

Mercyhurst found itself behind early once again after the Javelinas (42-16) scored the game’s first run in the top of the 3rd inning off Mercyhurst starter Tyler Garbee. Levi Zents’ RBI single to left gave TAMUK the early advantage.

The Javelinas did the bulk of their damage in the fourth inning when they plated five runs to spring ahead 6-0. Garbee left the game after 3.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the season (6-1). In 3.2 innings, he allowed seven hits, three earned runs, one walk, and struck out two.

The same scoring magic the Lakers had at the Atlantic Regional could not be had in the second straight day game in Cary, as Mercyhurst stranded eight runners on base for the game.

Four of Mercyhurst’s seniors, Jimmy Standohar, Drew Delsignore, Daniel Elliott, and Collin Fantaskey, had the Lakers’ four hits for the game.

Mercyhurst freshmen Nicholas McRandal, Ryan Smerkar, Hunter Treece, and Adam Jeannette combined for 5.1 innings of relief with 7 hits and three earned runs allowed.

The shutout was just the second time this season the Lakers were kept off the scoreboard.
