Mercyhurst Downs RIT 6-3

ERIE, Pa. — The Mercyhurst men’s ice hockey team downed the Rochester Institute of Technology 6-3 on Tuesday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in front of 1,145 spectators.
 
Derek Barach scored two goals and one assist while Les Lancaster, Taylor Best and Patrick Piacentini each had one goal and one assist.  Josh Lammon also scored a goal. Bryan Sienerth tallied two assists while Zach Todd and Joseph Duszak each recorded one assist for Mercyhurst (11-10-2, 8-7-2).
 
Erik Brown, Alden Dupuis and Adam Brubacher scored for RIT (8-11-1, 7-7-0).
 
Lammon started off the scoring when he tallied a shorthanded goal early in the first period. On a 3-on-1 breakaway, Best skated the puck across the blue line and towards the goal before passing across the goal to Duszak, who dropped it back to Lammon. Lammon went top shelf to make it 1-0.
 
Lancaster scored just under four minutes later on the power play. RIT tried to clear the puck and Lancaster one timed it into the back of the net.
 
The Lakers then scored two goals in 38 seconds to make it 4-0. Barach scored his first goal of the game on the power play when he skated the puck through traffic to tuck the puck in the top corner of the net. Best scored next when Piacentini passed the puck up to Sienerth who dropped it back to Best who was in front of the net. Best beat RIT goaltender Logan Drackett on his left side to extend the Laker lead to 4-0.
 
During the second period, Barach scored his second goal of the game. Lancaster passed the puck across the ice to Sienerth who slid it up to Barach. Barach skated with the puck and shot it through traffic to find the back of the net and make it 5-0.
 
Three minutes later, Piacentini scored on the power play when Barach dropped the puck to him and he send the puck through traffic and into the net.
 
RIT then scored three goals in the third period to close out the scoring.
 
Early in the third period, Brown got the Tigers on the board on the power play to make it 6-1. Myles Powell and Brubacher had assists.
 
Three minutes later, Dupuis scored with assists from Matt Abt and Ryan Kruper.
 
Brubacher scored late in the third to make it 6-3 and the Lakers held on from there.
 
The Lakers went 3-for-7 on the power play while the Tigers were 1-for-6.
 
Brandon Wildung stopped 31 out of 34 shots on net for Mercyhurst. Drackett made six saves out of 10 shots on net for RIT before Ian Andriano came in a relief effort, stopping 15 out of 17 shots on net.
 
The Lakers will be back in action Jan. 19-20 when they welcome American International to the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Both games start at 7:05 p.m.
