Mercyhurst Men’s Hockey Wins, Women Fall


The Mercyhurst men’s hockey team claimed its first-ever Snowtown Throwdown win, taking down Ferris State, 4-1, on Saturday at Erie Insurance Arena.
Matthew Whittaker scored two goals while Taylor Bestand Derek Barach each scored once for Mercyhurst (1-1-2). All goals were scored on the power play, marking the first time MU had four power-play goals since a 9-1 win over Sacred Heart on Jan. 6, 2012.

Taylor Best had two assists apiece and Nathan FerrieroJack Riley, Josh Lammon and Joseph Duszakhad one assist each.

Zach Yoder scored for Ferris State (2-4-0).
Taylor Best scored on the power play at 17:46 of the first period to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead going into the second period. He slapped in a one-timer after receiving a cross-ice pass from Lancaster. Ferriero secured possession for Mercyhurst earlier in the play to claim his assist.
During the second period, Yoder scored for Ferris State to tie the game up at 1-1. Andrew Mayer and Chris Allemon recorded assists.
The Lakers took the lead back when Barach capitalized on the power play to make it 2-1 at 2:53 in the third period. Lancaster and Riley added assists.
At 10:08 of the third period, Whittaker scored his first goal of game on the power play. His goal was assisted by Lammon and Best.
Whittaker scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 18:06 of the third period giving the Lakers a 4-1 win.
Brandon Wildung stopped 23 out of 24 shots on net for the Lakers while Justin Kapelmaster saved 32 out of 36 shots on net for the Bulldogs.
Mercyhurst went 4-for-7 on the power-play while Ferris State went 0-for-4.

The Lakers are back in action on Oct. 27-28 for a weekend series matchup at Bentley.
