Women’s Water Polo Ride Strong First Quarter To Win
ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women’s water polo team defeated Penn State Behrend 15-7 in a crosstown matchup Thursday evening at the Junker Center.
The Lakers (6-6) were powered by a strong first quarter where they outscored the Lions (6-10) 8-1. Freshman Chloe Kunst had two of her game-high four goals in the opening quarter.
Kunst was one of nine Lakers with a goal in the game. Nicki Borella, Maddie Nye, and Erin Glass joined Kunst with multi-goal efforts (two each). Nye also chipped in two assists for four points.
Mercyhurst was extremely efficient offensively, scoring on 15-of-23 shots (.652). They were also efficient on the power play, scoring on five-of-nine chances.
Defensively, Mercyhurst had 24 steals as a team, led by Kunst with five. Cristal Maldonado drew a team-high four exclusions.
Sarah O’Keefe and Madison Maes split time in goal, combining for seven saves and a steal.
Mercyhurst travels to Lewisburg, Pa. for a game against Bucknell Saturday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
