Mercyhurst Women Turning Into Basketball Giant Slayers

Sports

The Mercyhurst Lady Lakers have knocked off a nationally ranked opponent in each of the past two Saturday’s.

The top two teams in the PSAC West, California (PA.) and Indiana (PA.), own just five losses all season between the two and two of them have come at the hands of Mercyhurst.

While the Lady Laker program is going through a transition losing heavy minutes from last year’s NCAA tournament team, they’re prospering in big time moments this year, something head coach Deanna Richard hopes will pay off in the long run.

Richard said, “I think it’s just a different mentality.  And as a coach I think that that’s one thing that we’ve tried to as a staff, rather, is change and just try get into their minds a little bit more, because physicality, it is what it is.”

Mercyhurst Prep graduate and Mercyhurst freshman guard Emily Shopene said, “It builds a lot of confidence for our team going into like the future and next games this year and following years.”
