Mercyhurst Women’s Hockey To Face Clarkson in NCAA Tournament

The Mercyhurst women’s ice hockey team will play top-ranked and defending national champion Clarkson University in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey National Tournament as announced Sunday evening. 

The game will be played at Clarkson’s home site, Cheel Arena, in Potsdam N.Y. at Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m.

The winner will advance to the Frozen Four at Riddler Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. March 16-18. 
 
The Lakers are fresh off their 14th conference tournament title in program history after winning the College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament last weekend in Buffalo, N.Y. With their 5-3 championship game win over #9 Robert Morris, Mercyhurst received an automatic qualification into the final eight-team field.
 
This tournament appearance marks the 12th NCAA Tournament in program history for Mercyhurst. The Lakers have played in four Frozen Fours and one national title game back in 2009.
 
Rounding out the eight-team playing field with the Lakers are their first-round opponent Clarkson, Boston College, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colgate, and Northeastern.

The Clarkson Golden Knights (33-4-1) won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) regular-season and postseason crowns this season. The Golden Knights are looking to defend their 2017 national title, their second in school history (2014). 
 
Mercyhurst leads the all-time series against Clarkson 8-5-4 and have the slight advantage in overall scoring 34-27. These two teams have met only once in the NCAA Tournament, with Clarkson coming away with the 5-1 victory in Frozen Four in 2014.
