Penn State squeaks by Indiana

The 18th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, fresh off back-to-back losses, travel to Indiana looking to right the ship against the Hoosiers. 

1st Quarter:

Penn State will receive in the first half

KJ Hamler with a 56 yard kick return to open up the game. Penn State at the Indiana 36.

Trace McSorley finds Miles Sanders for 30 yards wide open out of the backfield. 1st and goal for the Nittany Lions.

Hoosiers respond with a very methodical drive, keeping Penn State off balance with the run and pass. Stevie Scott punches it in from 5 yards out. Penn State 7 Indiana 7. 10:18 1st Quarter.

Penn State moves the ball on their next drive, and gets into Indiana before a drop on 3rd down from Juwan Johnson. On the drive, Johnson did become the 32nd player in program history to go over 1,000 receiving yards. Blake Giliken pins the Hoosiers at their own 5 yard line.

Teams exchanging punts. Hoosiers have shown a great ability to protect their quarterbacks today, but have shot themselves in the foot with drops by WR and penalties. Penn State 7 Indiana 7. 2:53 1st Quarter.

Trouble for Penn State as teh Nittany Lions attempt at a fake punt backfires. Indiana converts the opportunity into a touchdown. Indiana 14 Penn State 7. 1:06 1st Quarter.

2nd Quarter:

Penn State can’t do anything with their drive. McSorley is sacked then intercepted after the ball goes off Mac Hippenhammer. McSorley also became the 11th player in Big Ten history to surpass 10,000 career total yards.

Indiana goes 3 and out, and gives it back to Penn State. Nittany Lions go on a nice long drive, McSorley with a 44 yard run to get it deep into Hoosier territory. Tommy Stevens inserted into the game, part of the Lion Package, and it pays dividends. Stevens shifts into the quarterback position, fakes to McSorley then hits Pat Freiermuth for a 23 yard touchdown. Penn State 14 Indiana 14. 10:08 2nd Quarter

Penn State forces another Indiana punt. Juwan Johnson gets the Nittany Lions rolling as he hauls in a third down pass, breaks a tackle, and then scampers for 59 yards into the red zone. Penn State can’t put it into the end zone. Jake Pinegar connects from 27 yards out. Penn State 17 Indiana 14. 6:27 2nd Quarter

Indiana moves the ball down the field and gets down to the Penn State 10 yard line, but the Nittany Lion defense holds on 4th down. Penn State looked to be offsides initially there but Hoosiers did not snap it in time. Penn State takes over on downs with less than 2 minutes till halftime.

Penn State proceeds to go three and out. Blake Gilliken then unleashes just a 29 yard punt. Hoosiers take over in Nittany Lions territory.

Indiana gets tackled in bounds on the final play of the first half, and is unable to get its field goal unit on the field. Penn State leads 17-14 at the half. Hoosiers will get the ball to start the 2nd half.

3rd Quarter:

Indiana starts the second half with the ball, and quickly marches into Penn State territory. However, the Nittany Lions force a fumble and Garrett Taylor recovers for Penn State.

Penn State then moves it into Indiana territory with the offense overcoming yet another drop by the WR corp. Nate Bowers picks up a bad holding penalty after McSorley already had the 1st down on 3rd down, but KJ Hamler holds on to convert on the ensuing play. The drive stalls and Jake Pinegar hits his second field goal of the day. This one from 32 yards out. Penn State 20 Indiana 14 with 7:16 left in the 3rd.

Garrett Taylor gets ejected for targeting after officials say he used the crown of his helmet. Taylor will miss the 1st half of next week’s game against Iowa.

Indiana moves it down the field, converting multiple third downs and punches it in to take a 21-20 lead with a little more than four minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

Johnathan Thomas takes the ensuing kickoff 94 yards down to the 5. Trace McSorley scores a play later. Jake Pinegar’s extra point is blocked. Penn State leads 26-21 with 3:41 left in the 3rd.

End 3rd Quarter: Penn State 26 Indiana 21. Nittany Lions have the ball backed up in the shadow of their own goal line to start the final quarter.

Total Yards: Penn State 335 Indiana 421

Fourth Quarter:

Penn State moves it a little out of the shadow of its own goal line, but the Nittany Lions have to punt. Penn State recovers a fumble caused by Jonathan Sutherland, as it goes right into the arms of Nick Scott. Penn State in business.

Nittany Lions take advantage as McSorley rushes in for his 2nd touchdown of the half. 33-21 Penn State with 10:25 left.

McSorley now has 327 total yards including 107 on the ground. Penn State still with a 12 point lead with 6:18 left.

Nick Scott with his second turnover of the day, intercepting an Indiana pass. The interception likely seals a Penn State win.

Indiana scores with :49 left to cut the lead to 33-28. Will come down to an onside kick.

Indiana recovers onside kick.  Hoosiers will have a chance to pull off a remarkable win.

Penn State holds on 33-28. Nittany Lions improve to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play.
