Otters Lose 5-2 to Saginaw

The Erie Otters lost to the Saginaw Spirit tonight on home ice by the final score of 5-2. Cade Robinson and tonight’s poster boy, Taylor Raddysh, had the only goals for the Otters. Veterans were honored before the game for Veteran’s Day (US) and Remembrance Day (CAN).

The Saginaw Spirit opened the scoring early in the first, following a delay of game due to a stanchion falling onto the ice. The Otters started to gain momentum towards the end of the period, despite not being able to get anything going on the power play just over halfway through the first. Cade Robinson tied the game at one goal a piece with five minutes to go, lifting the puck top shelf over Cormier’s glove. The Otters were badly outshot in the first period of play, the Spirit holding them to just five shots on goal to their thirteen.

The Spirit scored another early goal to start the second period. Four minutes later, they tallied another goal to make it 3-1 as Oberoi was screened and the puck was able to flip over him and in. The Otters were on the penalty kill three times during the period, but managed to generate a lot of shorthanded attempts, none of which resulted in good goals. Maksimovich had a shorthanded breakaway but was hooked and thereby unable to score; there was no call on the play. Later, Saginaw’s Busdeker got a breakaway while shorthanded, took off Oberoi’s net, and was awarded a penalty shot on the play. He proceeded to score on his penalty shot attempt to put the Spirit up 4-1 going into the final period of play.

The third period was largely more of the same. Saginaw scored an early goal again, 5-1. Kurtis Henry hit Marcus Crawford in Erie’s zone; Crawford dropped the gloves and Henry proceeded to drop Crawford. Taylor Raddysh scored on a powerplay goal from Maksimovich with 14 seconds left in the game. The final score was 5-2. Saginaw held the Otters to a measly 14 total shots. Anand Oberoi made 26 saves on 31 shots faced for a 0.839 save percentage.

The Otters have a series of road games beginning in Mississauga at 11am on the 15th, against the Steelheads. Their next home game will be on Thanksgiving night.
