A.J. Ladwig’s superb night on the mound helped Erie (48-52) get past the Richmond Squirrels (46-53) 6-4 on Monday night at UPMC Park.
Daz Cameron hit into a 5-4-3 double play that plated Danny Woodrow to score the first run of the night on Jake McCasland in the first.
The SeaWolves added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kody Eaves lined a ball off the mound that bounced into shallow right, allowing Isaac Paredes to run home. Chad Sediocracked a sac fly to deep left later in the inning, scoring Will Maddox to make it 3-0 Erie.
Will Maddox ripped a double down the right field line to push Paredes in to score on McCasland in the bottom of the fourth inning to propel Erie ahead 4-0.
Richmond started to creep back on Erie in the 7th inning. Matt Lipka jumped aboard on a bunt single with two outs, and then stole second on Jake Rogers. John Riley grounded a ball sharply down the third base line. Kody Eaves stabbed the ball, but skipped the throw to first. It was ruled a single, but Lipka scored on a throwing error. After the top of the 7th, Erie’s lead sank down to 4-1.
19-year-old Isaac Paredes punched a ball into left field in the bottom of the 7th, driving in two runs on a double to make it 6-1.
The wheels began to slide off for Erie in the top of the 8th. Mark Ecker allowed three runs to score after serving up three walks, only earning one out in effort. Andrew Graham called upon John Schreiber from the bullpen with one out, and the righty worked the final two outs after surrendering a hit and striking out one.
John Schreiber tossed a scoreless ninth, racking up his 14th save for Erie and ending the game 6-4.
Ladwig (2-0) pitched 7.0 IP for Erie, allowing one unearned run on six hits and one walk and six strikeouts. McCasland (3-3) received the loss after allowing four runs, three earned in three innings of work on five hits.
The SeaWolves and Richmond Flying Squirrels return to UPMC Park Tuesday at 7:05 PM. RHP Alfred Gutierrez (1-1, 3.48 ERA) will duel with Richmond’s RHP Taylor Hill (0-4, 4.05 ERA).
