The SeaWolves lost in walk-off fashion for the second straight night in the series opener against Portland, 7-5.
The lead didn’t last long for the SeaWolves. With two men on in the fourth, Sea Dogs second baseman Josh Tobias smoked his first home run of the year on a three run shot to tie it 3-3.
The visiting team jumped back in the seventh. Mike Gerber singled to put Dominic Ficociello on third off of Josh Smith. Moments later, Sea Dogs pitcher Josh Smith threw away a pick off attempt at first that propelled Ficociello to score, giving Erie the 4-3 lead.
With the score at 5-4 in the 8th inning, Gabriel Quintana nailed his 13th home run of the year to tie the ball game back up at 5-5.
Headed to the bottom of the ninth, Waldis Joaquin struck out the first two batters before Jeremy Barfield singled off of the Maine Monster. With a runner at first, Nick Longhi smacked a walk off home run to left center field to hand the SeaWolves another heartbreaking loss.
Despite the loss, A.J. Ladwig was strong in the start. The Starter allowed four runs on six hits in 6.1 innings, which was his longest outing of the season. Joaquin fell to 2-3 on the season, while Josh Smith picked up his first win for Portland.
